these and IX 4 [= G 2170] a fragment of sandstone statuette. From debris filling pits quantities of the common little red brown ware offering cups and saucers. Also a number of the crude irregular jars. [ILLUSTRATION]

Friday, February 9, 1912

Portion of railway transferred to open up excavations to north of X 3 - 4 [= G 2210 - G 2220], the last pair of mastabas to north, on edge of plateau. Rest of force continuing north in passage between IX 4 [= G 2170] and VIII 5 [= G 2180] and also finishing space between IX 3 - 4 [= G 2150 - G 2170]. A continuation can be traced here of the mud brick chapel, a sort of long entrance passage. The north half of the masonry on the east face of IX 3 [= G 2150] is preserved nearly to top of debris (surface) and at northeast corner is a false door. In the debris in front of this is a heavy long block, probably lintel, with much weathered inscription.

Dr. Junker has found a sculptured offering chamber with colored reliefs. It is the square pier porch type. [ILLUSTRATION]
