for Mr. Frick's inspection. The roof will be covered with boards for protection against wind and rain, and a special guard placed over it until statue is removed. Considering the rough character of debris filling these chambers it is very fortunate that more damage has not been done to statue. In this debris was a stela with sunken reliefs filled with color remarkably preserved. This mastaba with its chapel was quite below the present surface and not indicated by any surface contour. It is certain, however, that these two chambers had been entered at some past period.

The shaft of Lepsius 23 (= G 2000) has now reached a depth of 27 and half meters and still continues. The debris seems very compact and undisturbed and the shaft looks very promising.

Dr. Junker very kindly showed me his tomb [= G 2100-II]. It is very perfect, only a fragment of the roof of porch having been broken by the usual thieves. Before the tomb is a walled court with a door at northeast corner, a projecting stone serving to hold the upper socket of a door. The wall of this court has a semicircular coping.
